Breeding rules

The current breeding rules for kooikerhondjes are acknowledged by Finnish Kooiker Club, Finnish Spaniel Club and Finnish Kennel Club and they are valid for 2007-2011. PLEASE NOTE: Breeders that follow the breeding rules can announce that they follow them, but today the Kooiker Club has no means of forcing anybody to do so.

BREEDING RULES REGARDING HEREDITARY DECEASES

ENM, epilepsy, autoimmune deceases and patella-luxation are considered to be the most feared and serious deceases.
1. Hereditary Necrotising Myelopathy (ENM)

  • Sufferers from ENM and their offspring are excluded from breeding
  • Parents that have offspring suffering from ENM are excluded from breeding
  • Offspring of ENM carriers are excluded from breeding
  • Full siblings of ENM carriers are excluded from breeding

2. von Willebrand decease (vWd)

  • Only genetically vWd-free dogs/bitches are allowed for breeding. The breeder has to prove the status:
  • the dog/bitch itself is genetically vWd-free
  • the vWd-free -status of a dog/bitch is granted, because previous generations are proved to be vWd-free

3. Epilepsy

  • Sufferers and their offspring are excluded from breeding
  • Parents that have two or more offspring suffering from epilectic-form seizures are excluded from breeding
  • If full siblings of the parent have two or more offspring suffering from epilectic-form seizures, the parent is excluded from breeding
  • Parents that both have offspring suffering from epilepsy should not be combined.

 4. Hereditary eye-deceases
a) cataract (HC)

  • Sufferers from HC are excluded from breeding.
  • Parents that both have offspring suffering from HC, should not be combined.
  • Before breeding, the eyes have to be officially examined and HC-free.
  • The dog/bitch has to be at least 12 months old when the eyes are examined.
  • The examination is valid for 24 months.

b) districhiasis

  • Sufferers from districhiasis should not be used for breeding
  • Parent with two or more offspring suffering from districhiasis should not be used for breeding
  • Combination that has offspring suffering from districhiasis should not be renewed
  • In Germany 10 % of kooikers and in Holland 4 % of kooikers have the diagnosis 'districhiasis'. In Finland it has also become more common.

c) other eye deceases

  • There has been one PHTVL2, some PHTVL and PPM open dianosis and one MRD in Finland
  • In Holland, the breeding rules concerning eye deceases are strict. Due to that, in Holland the bitch/dog is excluded from breeding, if it has any probably hereditary eye decease. By excluding single dogs, the spreading is presumably avoided. In Finland the situation is being observed.

5. Patella-luxation (PL)

  • The knees have to be officially examined after the dog/bitch is over 12 months old.
  • The results 0 and 1 are accepted so that if the other parent has result 1 the partner has to have result 0.
  • Combination that has had offspring suffering from PL, should not be renewed.

6. Hip-dysplacy (HD)

  • The hips should be officially examined after the dog/bitch is over 12 months old.
  • The results A, B and C are accepted so that if the other parent has result C, the partner should have A or B.

7. Autoimmune deceases and eye-malformations

  • Sufferers are excluded from breeding
  • Parents that have near relatives suffering from similar kind of autoimmune deceases or eye-malformations should not be combined.

8. Kinked tails

  • A dog/bitch is excluded from breeding if it has a severely kinked tail
  • Combination that has had offspring with severely kinked tails, should not be renewed.
  • The upper and sharper the angle in the tail is, the severer it is considered to be.
  • Kinked tails seem to have become more common in Holland and in other countries. Because of that and because they might be connected to changes in vertebrae, Holland excludes the kinked tail dogs/bitches from breeding and deny the renewing of a combination with kinked tail offspring.

BREEDING RULES REGARDING AGE LIMITS AND OTHERS

1. Age limit

  • The dog and the bitch have to be healthy and in good condition.
  • The dog should be at least 18 months and the bitch at least 22 months old at the time of mating. The bitch should be mated before she reaches the age of 9 years if she has had a litter before, if not, she should be mated until the age of 5 years

2. Number of matings/puppies

  • It is recommended that a single dog/bitch has no more than two litters or eight puppies until the first litter is 18 months old. This way the breeder gets more information on health and quality both on the breeding dog/bitch and its offspring before the breeder decides whether to continue using the dog/bitch for breeding.
  • The dog/bitch should have maximum 15 puppies before the age of five years.
  • The lifetime share of the puppies of a single dog/bitch should be less than 10 % out of puppies born in two recent years and less that 5 % out of puppies born in five recent years.

3. Renewing a combination

  • The combination should not be renewed if there were 3 or more puppies born previously.

4. Character / behaviour

  • The objective is to maintain the character typical for kooikerhondje as it is described in the VHNK's breeding rules.
  • it is recommended that
  • when two show judges have judged the dog/bitch, none of them has made a negative remark on the behaviour.
  • when 3-5 show judges have judged the dog/bitch, not more than one has made a negative remark on the behaviour OR
  • in the breeding inspection the dog/bitch has gained an approved remark on behaviour.
  • A negative remark on the behaviour means that dog/bitch can’t be touched or it is afraid or attacking or biting, or is disqualified, or the prize is lowered to grade 3, 0, or 'cannot be judged', because of the behaviour.
  • If the dog/bitch has any deflect in behavior the use in breeding should be critically considered.

5. Outlooks

  • The dog/bitch should have at least two results with 'very good' or better and at least other of them after age of 15 months.

For well-grounded reasons a breeding recommendation can be given for a combination that doesn't fulfill all the criteria.
